Portfolio types
TrackMyShares offers two types of portfolios to suit different tracking needs:
Cost basis portfolio (recommended for beginners)
A cost basis portfolio is the simplest way to track your investments. You enter:
- The stock or crypto symbol
- The number of shares/units you own
- Your average cost per share
This type is perfect if you:
- Want a quick overview of your holdings
- Don't need detailed transaction history
- Are importing a summary from your broker
Transaction-based portfolio (PRO)
A transaction-based portfolio tracks every buy and sell transaction individually. This gives you:
- Complete transaction history
- Automatic cost basis calculation using FIFO
- Accurate capital gains tracking
- Tax report generation
This type is ideal if you:
- Trade frequently
- Need accurate tax reporting
- Want to track your investment journey over time
Tip: You can start with a cost basis portfolio and upgrade to transaction-based later when you need more detail.
Portfolio settings
After creating your portfolio, you can customise several settings:
Display currency
Choose which currency to display your portfolio values in. TrackMyShares supports:
- USD (US Dollars)
- AUD (Australian Dollars)
Your holdings will be converted to your chosen display currency using current exchange rates.
Default view
Set whether to show your portfolio with the summary view or detailed holdings table by default.
What's next?
