How to track your US stock portfolio
Whether you hold a handful of blue-chip stocks or a diversified mix of ETFs and growth names, keeping tabs on your US stock portfolio matters. Knowing where you stand helps you make better decisions about rebalancing, tax planning, and when to take profits or cut losses.
Most investors rely on their brokerage app. That works for a single account, but it falls short when you hold investments across Fidelity, Schwab, and Robinhood, or when you want deeper analysis like tax-lot tracking, dividend projections, or benchmark comparisons. A dedicated portfolio tracker fills that gap.
Adding NYSE and NASDAQ stocks
Getting started takes a few minutes. Create a portfolio in TrackMyShares, set the currency to USD, and start adding holdings. You can search by ticker symbol or company name. TrackMyShares covers all major US-listed securities:
- Individual stocks on NYSE and NASDAQ
- ETFs like SPY, QQQ, VTI, VOO, and SCHD
- Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum
For each holding, you can enter shares and average cost for a quick overview, or record individual buy and sell transactions for detailed tracking.
Portfolio analytics
Once your holdings are in, the dashboard shows total value, gain/loss, daily change, and dividend income at a glance.
You can dig deeper with allocation charts (by holding, market, or asset type), a performance chart across different date ranges, benchmark comparison against the S&P 500 or Nasdaq 100, and historical snapshots that show exactly what your portfolio looked like on any given date.
Importing trades via CSV
If you already have a trading history with your broker, you don't need to enter everything manually. Export your transactions as a CSV and import them directly. The import tool maps columns automatically where possible and lets you review everything before confirming. TrackMyShares also detects stock splits in your historical data and adjusts quantities accordingly.
This feature requires a transaction-based portfolio on the PRO plan.
Dividend tracking
For income-focused investors, TrackMyShares shows dividend yields for each holding, projected annual income across your portfolio, a dividend calendar with expected payment dates by month, and historical payment records.
If you hold dividend staples like Johnson & Johnson, Coca-Cola, or Realty Income, you can see exactly how much income your portfolio generates and when to expect payments.
Tax reporting
One of the most valuable features for US investors. TrackMyShares generates reports breaking down capital gains into short-term (held 12 months or less) and long-term (held more than 12 months) categories, along with:
- Wash sale detection flagging transactions where you sold at a loss and repurchased within 30 days
- Tax-loss harvesting analysis identifying holdings with unrealised losses that could offset gains
- Dividend income summary for the tax year
You can export reports as PDF or CSV to share with your accountant or import into tax preparation software.
